Training touch-typing
Keybr.com
At the same time that I switched to rhodium layout (end of 2024), I started using keybr.com to learn the new layout. After a couple of weeks, I got to 30wpm, but decided that while I’m progressing in my accuracy and speed, I will continue to train. I have a goal of 30 minutes per day, and after 1.5 to 2 months after starting with the new layout) I’m regularly typing around 45wpm, with peaks above 50wpm, which is nice. I suspect this is about the speed I had before switching. In my mind, I imagine my goal to be an average of 75wpm, but while there is progress and motivation, I will continue.
In January 2025, I notice that the first lessons on keybr every day are very good: good speed and high accuracy. However, I started making more mistakes after 5 to 10 lessons. If I keep my focus I can keep the mistakes down, but it is hard work. As I now started typing Alice in wonderland for a couple of days, it feels like having a story makes it easier to focus. I had an average of 40wpm (lower than word lists because of punctuation i gather), but an accuracy above 97%.
Other typing sites
Typing Alice in wonderland made me realised that if I aim to have a higher average speed, I ought to train with punctuation and capital letters too.
While keybr is great for learning the position of the letters, and improving each key, there are much better sites for typing books.
And I love typing books! Not only do I train, but I come to read the book as well! Perfect, since I love reading. The site I use most is entertrained, because my favourite interface, but it only save your data and progress in your browser cookies, so you can’t pickup up where you left of from another browser or computer. For that aspect, I like typersguild also.
There are probably other sites I haven’t tried though.
